There are different genetic factors that can cause you to have a lighter or heavier period flow. Though some heavy period flows can be genetic consult with your doctor if you have noticed long periods of heavy flow lasting over 6 days. Common causes of heavy periods can be due to miscarriage, use of some IUD’s, fibroids, problems with blood clotting, polyps or certain medical conditions.

During the first year of menstruation your period may be irregular. There will be times when you have a light period and a heavy period. You may also notice discharge when your period is over. Keep a liner on if you are planning to use a menstruation cup or tampon for the first time. Some females will genetically have a heavier period flow; consult with your parents at home to get family history. If you have a heavy constant flow for longer than 6 days straight consult your local clinic or physician.
