Puberty starts at a different age for all women. Most girls will start puberty between the ages of 12 - 16. At this time the menstrual period will start, growth of body hair, and development of breasts or hips may occur. Puberty can start as early as age 8 or as late as age 18 depending upon the bodies hormones, and physical activity.

Puberty is caused in the female body in preparation for the development for childbirth. The body is preparing itself to be able to hold a child in the future if a woman chooses. During puberty a woman may also notice that her hips are starting to widen which will aid in birth. Puberty is not something you can stop unless you go through hormone therapy as directed by your doctor. Talk to your parents or doctor about puberty if you are nervous or have any questions.
